Behind the podium is where you can see all of the celebrities up close and personal. The unfortunate thing is that you have to have a press pass or a VIP guest pass to get back here. After the podium ceremony all of the riders that are in jerseys or have won the stage have multiple interviews to go through. For the race leader this lasts for hours. This taxing requirement is why Lance, or any rider, doesn't want to be in the lead for too many stages. The other riders are being fed and getting massages while the leaders have to work the reporters.
